Before I moved to New York, my grandmother was diagnosed with dementia. I didn’t know anything about the disease but I did know that it was the reason she sometimes forgot who I was. In the few times she remembered me, music was present. It was the trigger. It transported her to moments in her past. It reminded her of who she was, who I was. It reminded her of our connection.
In My Element came as a response to my obsession with preserving memories. When you think about it music, it’s the soundtrack to our lives. It puts us in the context in which we experienced our life’s greatest and saddest moments.
In My Element is podcast that explores the relationship of music and memory. In my inaugural season, I seek to understand all the ways music informs our memories while collecting a few music memories along the way.
